Year of the Greeks
Uh huh... the Athens Olympics are coming this year and they promise to be very special. The Greek contingent at the Eleni Danilidou 3rd round match of the Australian Open seem to be firing up for their homeland games after a blistering performance today at the match. The sun was out and the boys were out to impress with some vocal chants (later Chris provided translations which told me that the rhyme was better than the actual words used lol). This Greek crowd was quite loud and gave the Italian opponent HELL... she was up 4-0 in the second when the crowd really broke the Italian's soul... she eventually lost 6-4!!! I think I watched them more than I watched the players haha. Good stuff... and it shat me how some people in the crowd were against the loud supporters, but for fuck's sake, it's a game and they are supporting their countryWOman! Bloody whingers.
Also watched a couple of matches at Vodafone Arena. The Nicole Pratt v Zvonareva match was awesome... very entertaining. The Russian was all over Pratt for the last bit of the match and her powerful hitting was great to watch...
But I think Paradorn Srichapan from Thailand stole the show at Vodafone. He came up against the Gugameister. The only plus for Guga was the fantasticly upbeat Brazilian fans with their drums and dances... this really gives international matches an awesome vibe and atmosphere! I absolutely love it, gets me buzzing seeing people bring their culture to our country and let us sample it. So as I said, Guga let the Brazilians down and Paradorn just inspired us to pick up a racket and hit some balls... he's powerful and precise and it's great to watch. Very humble as well, he bowed to the four corners of the stadium with hands clasped. You rock, Paraman!
Great day to start off the long weekend here.. Monday is a public holiday for Australia Day, I might go to the beach this weekend... not sure, will see how I go.
Hope you're all doing well...
Dan.
